Unseen Academicals, Terry Pratchett

March 9th, 2010, author : Britt Hellman

UK’s best-selling author Terry Pratchett’s latest novel Unseen Academicals (2009) is a parody on the cultural phenomenon of European football (soccer) and everything that surrounds it. As such, it may be better understood and enjoyed by Europeans than Americans; in particular since football hooliganism, a distinctly UK phenomenon, plays a central role in the story.

But the book is really about much more than football (soccer). It’s about the many foibles and follies of human nature, which are Universal, European or American alike. It is also a novel about every conceivable variety of pie (and its connection to football); fashion super models (and their connections to football super stars); as well as about orcs and goblins (connection to football unknown).

In typically characteristic Pratchett-fashion, everything on the Discworld mirrors things in our own world with a slight and hilarious twist. For example, a tail-gate market on the Discworld becomes a cart-tail market. And instead of cheerleaders, there are naiads dancing on the sidelines.

The main character in the book is the goblin-turned-orc Mr. Nutt, who is one of only a dozen or so surviving orcs on Discworld. In a display of philanthropy, two of the world’s most powerful despotic rulers decide to take Nutt on as a project, to help not only him but his entire persecuted race.

Vacationing In Jaco Costa Rica

March 8th, 2010, author : Victor Krumm

Some of the most popular beaches in Costa Rica are close to the small yet bustling town of Jaco. Two hours away from San Jose, and easily reached by car or comfortable, cheap, ubiquitous buses, Jaco is located on Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast in the northern part of Puntarenas province. This is a party town.

Jaco has long been popular because of its fun, casual and relaxed atmosphere, and many friendly people. More and more tourists from around the world have already learned of this fantastic place and travel to Jaco for its nearby tranquil, beautiful clean beaches and many things to do. And, it is easy to reach by car or comfortable, cheap, ubiquitous buses.

It wasn’t too many years ago that Jaco was a sleepy little Pacific beach community. Surfers discovered one great surfing beach after another nearby, a laid-back lifestyle, and cheap places to sleep. But, secrets are hard to keep and as word got out, more tourists started flocking to Jaco, looking for great relaxation, peace, and fun. Within the last half dozen years, Jaco has boomed. Where, not long ago, there was a single, quiet (except at night) little road through town, now there are towering high rises, nearby resorts, and lots and lots of restaurants and bars.

Why Modern Gyrocopters Are Now Amongst The Most Reliable Recreational Aircraft

March 7th, 2010, author : Stefan I Ginsberg

For many people gyrocopters a re abit of a novelty – they only see them when someone comes up with some strange new design, or hear about them when someone has an unfortunate accident.

The limited ability of these aircraft to fly at great heights or over long distances was never a problem for their owners who weren’t interested in being able to do this.

They were more interested in having their own aircraft which they could take up in the air and fly close to where they lived or were visiting.

Unfortunately there tended to be accidents in these aircraft, and what made it worse was the only time the aircraft received any media coverage was when someone was killed.

This of course does nothing to enhance the credibility of the aircraft in the minds of the public.

Recent developments in gyro flight means this perception is slowly changing.

There are modern models of gyrocopter now available which use the latest technologies and materials to build a safe and modern gyrocopter.

What most people don’t realise about gyrocopters is that the principle of flight on which they rely is not the problem.

Looking For Travel – Road Trips

March 7th, 2010, author : Byron Jonas

If you’re looking to travel then road trips are a great way to see the countryside and spend quality time with friends or loved ones, or to spend some alone time taking a peaceful drive, exploring the area. If you have the time, driving cross country is always a wonderful vacation, allowing one to stop and see the sights and sounds of the land. Travel – road trips are popular vacation destinations.

Plot your course out with maps or try a travel agent for tips and advice. The best, though more expensive option, is to rent a car, but you’ll put more wear and tear on your car if you don’t. You’ll want to be comfortable while driving too, especially if there are a few people going.

Do a day trip or a weekend getaway if you’re looking for something cheaper and easier. Sunday drives are always fun too, or just take a drive to sightsee around your area or other spots you haven’t been to yet.

Of course, it helps to find a destination first and then to map out places to stop in on the way, like hotels, eateries and tourist spots so that you have some options when going, and freedom to change the trip up if you want.

Travel And 4WDs A Great Combination

March 6th, 2010, author : Byron Jonas

If you are considering a trip there are a few things to understand concerning travel and 4WDs.

Four wheel drive vehicles come in two different types. The first has all four wheels active at all times, and the second allows the front wheels to be disengaged if you so desire. Each of these options have both advantages and disadvantages.

If you purchase a vehicle that stays in the four wheel drive mode at all times, it will likely consume more fuel than a vehicle that allows you to switch out of this option. In addition, steering for the vehicle is significantly different that when you are operating a two wheel drive vehicle. The advantage of this vehicle is that you do not need to make a change if you suddenly need the extra drive wheels. This can be very useful if you suddenly find yourself driving on a patch of black ice.

When you are shifted out of the 4WD mode, your vehicle will dive much like a conventional 2WD vehicle. While you will get somewhat better gas mileage when the vehicle is not in the 4WD the additional weight does give all 4WD vehicles lower gas mileage. With some of these vehicles, you must exit the vehicle to lock in the hubs before shifting the vehicle into the 4WD mode.

Clive Cussler’s The Wrecker

February 28th, 2010, author : Britt Hellman

The Wrecker is the second novel in a new Western series by “one of the greatest adventure novelists of our time” (imdb). It promises to become perhaps the most popular Clive Cussler series yet. Because, let’s face it, stories about the Wild West never lose their appeal to American (as well as International) audiences.

The main character of the of this new Clive Cussler series is a detective by the name of Isaac Bell, a fearless figure of physical prowess equaling James Bond who simultaneously possesses observational skills and powers of deduction rivaling Sherlock Holmes.

As luck would have it, Isaac Bell is an independently wealthy heir of a major American banking family, his detective work more of a passion and obsession than a job-for-money.

Isaac Bell gets hired by the Southern Pacific Railroad Company to find and stop a saboteur known as “The Wrecker,” who has targeted Southern Pacific construction sites throughout the West. If the sabotage continues in the midst of pressing deadlines to finish work on a major new track, it could cost Southern Pacific its good standing with its lenders, and rapidly lead to bankruptcy.

Corporate Boat Cruises Mix Business And Pleasure

February 25th, 2010, author : Adriana Noton

One industry that is gaining steam is the provider of corporate boat cruises. These smaller cruise lines and yacht leasing companies are attracting more business through better advertising, deluxe services, and fantastic rates. Encouragingly, more and more corporations are joining in the trend and booking mini-cruises for their employees and clientele.

If you research corporate boat cruises into any search engine and you will find dozens of companies vying for your business. Overall, they are pretty much the same with the exception of some pricing and a variation in the amenities offered. There are also companies who specialize in yacht rentals that may meet the same need. Most of the cruise and yacht companies are willing to negotiate a price should you have special needs or requests.

Corporations that normally utilize in-house facilities or hotel suites and conference rooms are now joining the cause. The main reason is that small cruise lines can now compete with hotel rates and in many ways, offer greater value. The amenities a cruise ship or yacht can offer are in most cases vastly superior to that of a hotel.

Great Places To Visit In The Gold Coast Region

February 24th, 2010, author : Cordelia Kennedy

While you are researching information on the Gold Coast region of Australia you will soon become familiar with the area known as Surfers Paradise. Let me start by clearing up the facts about Surfers Paradise and its relationship to the Gold Coast. Firstly, although many believe that this is the only area in the region where there is surfing this is not the truth. Secondly, it is often believed that Surfers Paradise and the Gold Coast is synonymous, again this is also a false belief.

What attracts most tourists to the Surfers Paradise area is the activities that are both in and around it. There is shopping, amusement parks, wonderful nightlife and fabulous dining experiences. It is true that Surfers Paradise is one of the most attractive areas in the region, but it is not the only place that will provide you with wonderful vacation memories.

Like any tourist area, however, there are many different accommodations available in this region and so with all the things to do, it often gets top billing on the web. But while many unique visitors enjoy the congregation of tourists and excitement in this region, some prefer a more secluded holiday stay and will seek accommodations at one of the other less frequented beach areas on the Gold Coast, like Main Beach and Broad Beach .
