The Chicago Bears – A Hopeful 2010 Season

March 10th, 2010, author : Matt Ryan

The Chicago Bears are one of the most beloved teams across the NFL, and one of the oldest as well. They have been playing professional football since before 1920, and have been playing their all time rivals — the Green Bay Packers — since only a couple years after their original start. Over this time, the Packers and Bears have played more than 170 games; fans can look forward to this battle every season. The Bears have always played well as a team, regardless of team members, even back when they were first formed. In fact, the team didn’t experience big losses until nearly the 1930s. The Bears colors, that you know today, have been part of who they are since only three years after they started playing in 1922.

Chicago sports fans are very loyal and passionate about their teams, and all know who Wrigley field belongs to — the Chicago Cubs. Ironically, the Bears needed a field to play on, back in the day, and that is where they scrimmaged. They soon thereafter had a field to call their own –Soldier field. Over the years the stadium began to fall apart, and was remodeled and ready to play in by the 2003 season. The stadium need such help, in fact, that only the street wall remains from the original, and the name was even changed to Soldier Field II.

The Most Interesting Occurrences In The Most Recent Super Bowl

March 9th, 2010, author : Gil Rojas

This year’s Super Bowl was definitely one that kept all the fans of the game watching it and getting so much out of it, just like the last two Super Bowl games were. That is so refreshing when you think about the games that took place in prior years before these three and how they were just disappointing to the fans.

Now, the Indianapolis Colts were heavily favored to come away with the victory at the Super Bowl, but, much to everyone’s surprise, the New Orleans Saints won instead. This was largely due to the fantastic way that Drew Brees and the rest of the Saint’s offense performed in the game; however, their defense did equally as well when dealing with the Colt’s quarterback, Peyton Manning.

So, let’s discuss down some of the highlights of Super Bowl XLIV. Perhaps you didn’t get to see the game; if that is the case, then these are the things that you would want to know about.

First of all, Drew Brees was nearly perfect after getting off to a shaky start. While he completed just three of his first seven pass attempts, he went 29 for his next 32 to finish with 32 completions in 39 attempts with 288 yards, 2 touchdown passes, and no turnovers.

The Ravens Just Might Have What it Takes

March 8th, 2010, author : Matt Ryan

The Baltimore Ravens are a fairly new franchise in the NFL. It took a lot of time, stress, and conversations for Art Modell to get the NFL to agree to the Ravens moving to Baltimore (from Cleveland). The first two years, of their new career, was spent in Memorial Stadium (the home of the Baltimore Colts). After this stint, the Raven’s new stadium was ready for play. Over the next 10 years the stadium would undergo numerous name changes, leaving the Ravens without a true ‘home’.

Coach Marchirboda, while a good coach, could not get the Ravens out of the rut they were in. They were not lying horribly, but they were not standing out as a good team either. Two years after their move into their new stadium, in 1998, a new head coach came on board — Brian Billick. The beginning of their first season with their new coach was tough; however, something changed and they ended the year on a better note. Now that some time has passed, everyone has had some time to learn how to play on each other’s strengths; the team is starting to pull together. In fact, they ended the ‘99 season with an 8-8 record.

Browns Keeping Starting QB Under Wraps

March 8th, 2010, author : Ross Everett

Most NFL head coaches place a priority on naming a starting QB before the regular season begins. Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini hasn’t named his starting QB yet. Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson will find out if they’re the starting QB in the next couple of days, but the first public confirmation their coach will give is when they trot out on the field after the NFL regular season begins.

Mangini stressed that he’d already made his choice. He also made clear that there would be no public announcement forthcoming:

“In terms of announcing it publicly, that’s not something I plan to do. It will be internal. I understand everybody has a different opinion on it. I respect that. I understand the excitement in relationship to that and I respect that as well. But that will be something that will be internal.”

As of Sunday, both quarterbacks were still in the dark and not saying much. Derek Anderson said he didnt have a clue:

“I know as much as you guys know.

While Quinn suggested that it wasnt a big concern for him”at least not as big as it is for the media:

Chiefs’ QB Cassel Remains Questionable For Week 2 Action

March 8th, 2010, author : Ross Everett

Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel missed the first game of the NFL regular season, and his status remains questionable for the teams second game of the year against the Oakland Raiders. Although he appeared to be running more briskly and favoring his knee less in practice this week, Chiefs coach Todd Haley maintains that hes still a game time decision. The Chiefs offense has looked pitiful ever since preseason and their ineptitude cost coordinator Chan Gailey his job. In addition to playing without their starting quarterback, Kansas City is woefully lacking in playmaking wide receivers.

The bright spot in all of his misery was the play of Brodie Croyle in the opening week loss to Baltimore. Still, Haley is anxious to get his #1 quarterback in the lineup and says that Cassel is working hard to make that a reality:

“Matt is doing everything he can to be ready. I would hope I would know a little sooner this week, although right now I can’t give a definitive answer. But the player’s doing everything he can to be ready, which generally helps speed the healing process.”

Haley also spoke of the teams struggles at the wide receiver position:

Giants Sign Eli Manning To Longterm Deal

March 8th, 2010, author : Ross Everett

The New York Giants have made quarterback Eli Manning their ‘franchise’ by offering him a six year, $97.5 million contract extension. Manning will earn just over $15 million a year, and $35 million of the contract is guaranteed. Should Manning play through the end of his contract hell be a Giant until 2015, meaning theres a decent chance hell play his entire career with the team.

Manning will earn roughly $200,000 per season more than Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha who agreed to a 3 year, $45 million contract earlier this summer. Hes also got the upper hand on his older brother, Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning who earns just over $14 million per season. Though the full term of his deal makes him the leagues highest paid player hell earn less this year than the Carolina Panthers Julius Peppers and the Cincinnati Bengals QB Carson Palmer, each of whom will pull down slightly more than $16 million.

Giants GM Jerry Reese spoke to the media about his team’s commitment to Manning:

Panthers Top Redskins For First Win Of 2009 NFL Season

March 8th, 2010, author : Ross Everett

The Carolina Panthers finally got one in the win column on Sunday afternoon, using a furious second half comeback to defeat the slumping Washington Redskins 20-17. Washington led 17-2 early in the third quarter before Carolina scored the final 18 points of the game to earn the victory. Jonathan Stewart’s eight yard fourth quarter run for a touchdown with a successful two point conversion completed the Panthers comeback. Carolina improved to 1-3 on the season while Washington dropped to 2-3.

NFL betting devotees who backed Washington as +5 road underdogs were finally rewarded for their faith as the Redskins covered for the first time this season. The Redskins are now 1-4 against the spread while the Panthers remain winless against the money at 0-4.

Redskins coach Jim Zorn is now on the hotseat after another defeat. The Redskins started the 2008 season 6-2, but are only 4-9 since then. The biggest problem this year has been offensive productivity”heading into this game the Redskins were averaging a mere 14 points per game. By that metric, the 17 points they put up in the first contest under new offensive coordinator Sherman Lewis has to seen as a marginal improvement. Of bigger concern, however, is the fact that the team blew a 15 point second half lead.

Cowboys Need Overtime To Prevail Over Chiefs

March 8th, 2010, author : Ross Everett

The Dallas Cowboys entered Sundays game with the Kansas City Chiefs with a 2-2 record, and may have expected an easy afternoon. The winless Chiefs, however, hung around throughout the contest and forced overtime before a Tony Romo touchdown pass to Miles Austin secured the victory for Dallas by a final score of 26-20. Austin was the Cowboys offensive star, catching two touchdown passes as part of a 250 yard receiving day. Tony Romo played better than he has all year, finishing with two touchdown passes and 351 yards with no interceptions. The Cowboys improved to 3-2 with the victory, while the Chiefs remain winless at 0-5.

NFL betting enthusiasts who took Kansas City as +7 home underdogs enjoyed a profitable day as the Chiefs got the money for the first time in the 2009 season. Kansas City is now 1-4 against the spread, while Dallas dropped to 2-3 against the number. The 46 points went OVER the posted total of 43.

Pittsburgh Blanks Buffalo In NFL Preseason Contest

March 8th, 2010, author : Ross Everett

Ben Roethlisberger looked sharp in his return to the Pittsburgh Steelers lineup from injury, while the Buffalo Bills offense continued to sputter as the Steelers topped the visiting Bills 17-0 in NFL preseason action. The victory improved Pittsburgh’s NFL preseason record to 2-1, while Buffalo dropped to 1-3.

NFL football betting enthusiasts who backed the Steelers cashed their tickets as Pittsburgh covered the -6 price as home favorites. The Steelers are now 2-1 against the number in the NFL preseason, while Buffalo dropped to 1-2-1 ATS. The 17 points went UNDER the total of 36 and represented the Steelers third UNDER in three games. Oddly enough for a team thats had trouble producing on offense, the game was the Bills first UNDER verdict of the preseason against three OVERs.

Roethlisberger was generally pleased with his overall caliber of play:

“I was really proud of the way the guys were able to move the ball and … change some plays at the line of scrimmage. We made some mistakes early, but then we drove down the field.”

Bills coach Dick Jauron, on the other hand, didn’t have much to be happy about:

Cleveland Beats Tennessee In NFL Preseason Play

March 8th, 2010, author : Ross Everett

Brady Quinn outplayed Derek Anderson, giving himself an edge in the Cleveland Browns QB battle, and his team outplayed the Tennessee Titans earning a victory in NFL preseason action. Quinn threw a touchdown pass as Cleveland used a 17 point third quarter to beat Tennessee 23-17. The Browns improved their NFL preseason record to 2-1 with the victory, while Tennessee dropped to 2-2.

Browns backers who bet on NFL preseason action were pleased with the outcome, as Cleveland easily covered as a -1 home favorite. The Browns are now 2-1 against the spread in the NFL preseason, while the Titans dropped to 1-2-1 against the number.

At least locally in Cleveland, the battle for the starting quarterback job was the big storyline of the game. After the contest Browns coach Eric Mangini conceded that the battle was very close but declined to give any indication of which way he was leaning:

“I’ll look at the tape tomorrow, talk to the coaches and continue to evaluate it. When the decision is made, I’ll let everyone know.”

Both signal caller aspirants have posted similar stats, but Quinn has thrown the only touchdown pass of the preseason for the Browns and this may make the difference. After the game, Anderson expressed some degree of resignation:
